It all began with a dream, which a feminist and socio-political activist, Ivelise Markovits, saw when she was working in Los Angeles County Probation Department. As a placement officer, she was assigned the responsibility of providing residential treatment facilities to the court’s female wards. However, it did not take much time for her to realize that the system was broken and that she needed to create a safe space where justice and equality could prevail for all. Making her vision a reality, in 1969, she created Penny Lane Centers. A non-profit organization, Penny Lane Centers empowers thousands of children, youth, and families every month. It has a continuum of programs focused on affordable housing, family preservation, mental health, LGBTQ+ empowerment, and other sensitive concerns. 

Started as a group home, Penny Lane Centers is now a multi-service organization with over 500 employees spread throughout Los Angeles County. While its support staff and social service providers know the drill and have been promoting care and empowerment for over 5 decades now, it was its HR team that was struggling to manage its business operations.
