It isn’t every day you get to step into a tornado and get a chance to control it too (except any day at MSI). Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) in Chicago is not just for tornado lovers, but also lovers of trains, submarines, superheroes, and much more.
At MSI Chicago, you can step aboard Pioneer Zephyr, one of America’s first diesel-electric streamlined passenger trains. Pioneer Zephyr created a speed record in 1934 with its “Dawn to Dusk” dash that started in Denver and ended in Chicago covering 775 miles non-stop in 13 hours and 5 minutes.
The Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) at Chicago catered to nearly 1.4 million guests in 2019. Being a science museum that caters to students and young adults, inspiring them to the science and technology, it gets seasonal peaks of visitors during the summer months and the holidays.
This increased visitor traffic translates to the operational challenge of managing a fluctuating workforce to support increased demand. MSI hires a lot of seasonal workers during the summer months and the holidays, which requires an upfront effort to make sure that the HR and IT teams can onboard new hires from ADP to Active Directory (AD), provide access to key information systems, and let new hires focus on making visits enjoyable to guests. At the same time, at the end of the peak season, the offboarding of seasonal workers must be performed timely to prevent data security risks.
Ongoing demand on hiring and offboarding seasonal staff puts a tremendous burden on the HR and IT operations teams, who had to play catch up just to make sure the new hires were fully set up with email and application access before they showed up. Often the “First Day at Work” experience was not optimal.
In addition, MSI Chicago was spending significant money on highly skilled sysadmins to take care of account and access creation – a job that was not really liked by these highly skilled resources. And there were always the risks of data leaks and security threats if the access of the terminated employee was not timely removed. MSI Chicago needed to find an onboarding automation product to alleviate these burdens.

Everything changed when MSI Chicago implemented Hire2Retire as a business process automation product. Hire2Retire received employee HR events from ADP as the master system of records (SOR). The employee events created new employees in AD, updated their identity profile and role-based system access, and performed terminations in near real-time.
The fully automated Employee Lifecycle Management and Identity Provisioning enabled MSI Chicago to keep up with the seasonal hires without the need to hire additional AD system admins. In summary, MSI Chicago benefited significantly by:
